Recurrent renal calculi in coexistence of horseshoe kidney and medullary sponge kidney

چکیده
Sir, Horseshoe kidney is the most common congenital renal fusion anomaly, with an incidence of 1 every 400–1600 births.[1,2] Kidney stones are common in patients with horseshoe kidney with a reported incidence ranging approximately from 20% to 80%.[1,3] Although altered anatomy‐related impaired urinary drainage is a proposed explanation for the kidney stone formation in patients with horseshoe kidney,[1,3] its exact underlying mechanism is still unclear. Hereby, we present a 34‐year‐old male with recurrent kidney stones. The patient was found to have horseshoe kidney and the suggestive findings of probable medullary sponge kidney (MSK) with distal renal tubular acidosis.

[A case of medullary sponge disease associated with horseshoe kidney].
A 60-year-old man visited our hospital with complaints of micturition pain and interruption of urinary stream. X-ray examinations were performed, showing no bladder and urethral stone. However, KUB revealed bilateral multiple renal stones. Excretory urography showed a horseshoe kidney and a concentration of the contrast medium in the ectatic tubules at the pyramidal apices. Calculi were also lo...

Physicians should be aware of the manifestations of medullary sponge kidney and nephrocalcinosis in patients with Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome. In addition to nephrocalcinosis, renal cysts, recurrent pain associated with infundibular stenoses, nephroblastomatosis, and Wilms tumor have also been reported.[3] As shown in our case presentation, patients with medullary sponge kidney usually form cal...

INTRODUCTION Nephrolithiasis is a multifactorial disease related to genetic disorders and environmental factors. Kidney stones are more common in adults and are associated with several metabolic and anatomical disorders. The major anatomical abnormalities, such as obstruction of the ureteropelvic junction, horseshoe kidney, complete or incomplete duplicated ureter, bifid pelvis, and medullary s...
متن کاملMedullary sponge kidney: state of the art.
Medullary sponge kidney (MSK) is a kidney malformation that generally manifests with nephrocalcinosis and recurrent renal stones; other signs may be renal acidification and concentration defects, and pre-calyceal duct ectasias. MSK is generally considered a sporadic disorder, but an apparently autosomal dominant inheritance has also been observed. As MSK reveals abnormalities in both the lower ...
متن کاملMedullary Sponge Kidney
Medullary sponge kidney (MSK) is a congenital disorder that can affect one or both kidneys, or only part of one kidney. There are ectatic and cystic changes of the medullary and papillary collecting ducts. This cystic dilatation of tubules may have an effect on urinary flow. Cysts can be 1-7 mm in diameter. Cyst formation is commonly associated with the development of small calculi within the c...
